Systems Approach to Health Transformation (2 x 1/2 Day Workshop)

 

Most people seek quick solutions to their health problems.  They want quick fixes to joint pain, bone diseases, heart problems, hypertension, diabetes, overweight and so on.  Some of these quick solutions may solve the problem but they come with unintended consequences. Or worse, the solutions may not actually solve the problem at all but in fact, worsen it. Either way, it leads to frustration and hopelessness.  Read on to see some examples.  And then we will offer you an alternative view to health transformation – a view that sees your body as a wholistic System!

 

The Problems with Most Of The Current Ways To Health Management


It is common to see unintended consequences that come with certain actions meant to solve some health-related problems.

 

For example, when one is diagnosed with high cholesterol, we would often: 


1.    Conclude that it is due to intake of high cholesterol foods (scientifically, it has been proven that in most cases it is not) and therefore start to avoid foods that contain cholesterol-like prawns, organ meats, and eggs. In fact, these foods are highly nutritious and avoiding them may lead to certain nutrient deficiencies (unintended consequences). The fact is, most of the cholesterol is actually produced by the body which actually regulates the level of cholesterol. When one consumes enough cholesterol, the body compensates by reducing the amount that it naturally makes. In contrast, when dietary cholesterol intake is low, the body reacts by increases its production to ensure there is always enough of this substance that is vital to the healthy functioning of the body.  

2.    Have a flawed mindset that blood cholesterol is evil.   As a result, we try to keep the cholesterol levels as low as possible. But Cholesterol, both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ types, are actually essential to health.  It is a compound needed by every cell structure for the proper functioning of the brain and the nervous system. A Low cholesterol level is actually dangerous and may lead to haemorrhagic stroke and cancer.  The key is to maintain a good balance of cholesterol with the body system.


3.    Cholesterol-lowering medications like 'Statin', often recommended by medical practitioners, can lead to side effects like sleeping difficulties, muscle aches, tenderness, weakness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting or even diabetes.  Furthermore, if we discontinue our statin medication, we will have a higher chance of getting heart attacks and strokes caused by a consequent rise in cholesterol.

 


 
Make no mistake, certain medical drugs and procedures certainly have their uses for treatment of certain diseases, particularly during the advanced stage. But do you really want to start popping pills before then and be dependent on them for life? 
Sometimes, our treatments do not solve the problem at all but only serve to worsen it.
 
For example, it is common to see the use of crash diets and commercial slimming procedures to lose weight quickly. The loss is due to the loss of muscle, water, and some fat weight.  The problem arises when the metabolic rate (due to the loss of muscle tissues) crashes subsequently. This actually makes one gain weight faster later making one fatter!

 

 

The Fundamental Solution: A Systems View


The above-mentioned problems are caused by approaching things as isolated events, instead of seeing them as part of a bigger system. 

 

 

 


 
When you understand how the whole System works in personal health management, you can start to see things in a whole new perspective and say' Eureka! Why didn't I think of that!'. You will understand that getting the 'System' right will not only fix many problems but also prevent a long list of other potential issues. You will create a ‘virtuous cycle’ of health transformation.
For example, when we try to lose weight, through proper nutrition and exercise, we will build muscle tissues and lose fat concurrently. This will increase our metabolic rate and make further weight loss easier. Doing so also prevents related issues like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, etc. Other desirable outcomes include feeling confident, better posture, looking attractive, etc. Now, not only the problem is solved but it is accompanied by many other positive effects!


Another example is fixing back pain.  Non-system methods like acupuncture, back manipulation strategies (e.g. chiropractic), taking pain killers, etc may only momentarily alleviate the pain, but don't get to the real cause. Root causes of back pain are bad posture, weight gain, weak muscles and/or prolonged sitting. So, the system's solution is to strengthen the core through exercise, lose weight, avoid prolonged sitting and the practice good posture.

•    Applying key Systems Thinking strategies
o    Do high leverage things (do less to achieve more)
o    'Synergy' principle (whole is greater than the sum of parts)

•    HIIT: stop following routines from non-scientific sources, they can do more harm than good.
•    Balance energy expenditure with intermittent energy renewal
