"You are what you born", some may say. For that, we beg to differ. Such negative comment is not at all helpful.

What are the basic principles of weight loss program?

The universal principles of any weight management program are:

Calorie In > Calorie Out = Weight Gain;

Calorie In = Calorie Out = Weight Maintenance

Calorie In < Calorie Out = Weight Loss (your targeted goal)

Note:

  • Calorie In refers to the energy from the food we consume daily
  • Calorie Out refers to the energy we expend through physical activities and normal body function daily.

But I tried. I cut down my food drastically and exercise everyday for 3hrs, but why haven't I lose the weight I'd like to?

You probably make some or all the mistakes listed here:

  1. You've cut down your food intake too much. Many weight management programs (even those offered at some hospitals) commit the same mistake. You were typically advised to eat like 1200~1800kcal per day. This will not work for long term! While cutting down calories is important, cutting down too much = dramatic decrease in metabolic rate. This will make your weight loss effort much more difficult later because it is this metabolic rate that helps to convert food into energy effectively. Slowed metabolic rate also means you will have a higher tenancy to put on weight if you don't exercise.
  2. The exercise program itself is not at all effective. It does not surprise us to hear you had been advised to walk 2 hrs everyday. Firstly, such program is not practical, who has so much time to exercise? Secondly, you were attempting to lose weight by engaging in very low intensity exercise because you were taught that low intensity means more fat is lost. Read our article on this:....
  3. You were never taught that besides exercise and nutrition, many factors come into your overall success. For example: social support, behavioral modifications, your other activities etc etc.

How long is the program?
