Attention
Heart Patient:
"How
To Exercise For Heart Recovery"
Learn How Exercise
Can Improve Quality Of Your Life Significantly
Coronary heart disease
(CHD), also called ischaemic heart disease, refers to the problems associated with a
reduced supply of blood to the heart muscle. This happens when 'plaques' form on the inner
wall of the arteries that supply the heart itself (atherosclerosis).
CHD
accounts for about 1 in 5 deaths and is the second leading cause of death in Singapore.
CHD has two major forms - heart attack (myocardial infarction) and angina (temporary
chest pain).

Heart Patients
should not exercise?
Says who? Although rest is important
after a heart attack, it’s just as important for you to participate in
recreation and social events as soon as you are cleared to do so and to begin making
physical activity a part of your daily life.
In many cases doctors will recommend
that survivors get more physical activity than they got before their heart attack. A good
night’s rest is especially important for heart attack patients. And if you feel
tired during the day, take a nap or a short rest. Heart patients should rest before they
get too tired. Your doctor will tell you what’s best for your specific
situation, but most heart attack patients find they have plenty of energy for both work
and leisure activities.
Unless activity level has been
restricted by a physician, congestive heart failure (CHF) patients are generally advised
to stay as active as possible. A report published in the Journal of the American
Medical Association (June 2000) found that CHF patients who exercised regularly showed
significant improvement, whereas CHF patients who were inactive showed a clear decline.
CHF patients should consult their physician before beginning an exercise program.
Why are lifestyle
changes important?
Research shows that heart
patients who have undergone proper exercise training and made changes to their eating,
when compared to those who just received "usual care", has the following
positive benefits:
But wait! If
you don't know how to exercise correctly for your condition, it can do more harm than
good, sometimes even fatal. It is prudent you seek professional help.
This is where we come in. We designed
the Health-Transformation-Program for Heart Patients (HTPheart) to help
individuals with a history of heart disease to get back their normal fitness again or
fitter, in the shortest possible time.
Who should
participate in HTPheart?
HTPheart is intended for individuals
who have been diagnosed with a coronary heart disease condition (eg. myocardial
infarction, angina, cardiac failure, arrhythmia, and recovery from heart surgery or
procedures), or who are at high risk for developing cardiovascular disease (high
cholesterol, high blood pressure, or a family history of coronary disease).
Is it HTPheart
same as a Cardiac Rehab Program?
This program is
intended for those who are already discharged from a Cardiac Rehab Program and are cleared
to exercise on their own. They are seeking to return to a normal exercise routine safely.
You will be given an individualized
treatment plan based on your medical and surgical history, identified risk factors and
desired goals.
This program can help you
get back to feeling like yourself again. It can even reduce the risk of another cardiac
event and prolong your life.
