Should a woman train the same way as a man?

Gym is not a place for men anymore. Statistics have shown that there are more women than men in fitness clubs. The problem is, many women are not getting the results they desired from their current routines.

This could be due to the fact that many of your routines are very similar to men's routines because many 'experts' say both genders should train similarly.

The fact is: women and men's body composition and psychological makeup are very different so it doesn't make sense to train same way. Women need to train differently from men. The choice of exercises should somewhat be different. The way of doing the exercises should be different somewhat.

Differences between women and men

Here are some key physical and psychological attributes of women as compared to men, which will impact the exercise routine and eating behaviors :

  • Women are frequently intimidated by hard physical labor and strength-related activities

  • Women generally have decreased bone density compared with men

  • Women produce substantially less testosterone than men

  • Women possess significantly less muscle than men.

  • Women tend to have more bodyfat percent

  • Women usually have lower blood pressure

  • Women are more prone to certain kind of injuries (e.g. torn ACL)

  • Women are less aggressive and less competitive

  • Women tend to say their likes and dislikes more readily

  • Women tend to be eat emotionally

  • Women do better  at endurance activities than strength activities

  • Women tend to be more self-conscious about their bodies

  • Women's metabolism is lower than men's.

  • Woman has several unique and important functions: menstruation, pregnancy, lactation etc. that affect them physiologically and emotionally

  • Women's hormones are of a different type and more numerous than men's.

  • Women have fewer red cells. Since the red cells supply oxygen to the body cells, women tire more easily and are more prone to faint.

  • Women's vital capacity or breathing power are significantly

  • Women withstand high temperatures better because metabolisms slow down less

If you are trying to follow a program without considering some of the above factors, you will definitely not achieve the most desirable outcome.

On top of the differences, there are the universal rules women must adhere to, if they want to get the type of BODY they want!

Rule no.1: Don't use little weights, ladies!

Granted, you should not lift weights like a man but doesn't mean you should lift like a 90 year old lady. Everyday, we see women in the gym handling 'ladies' weights, all in the hope of achieving a 'toned' physique. No way this is going to work. To get that 'toned' look, you must be serious in your training to develop the lean muscles.

Rule no. 2: Don't use too many machines!

Too many female exercises train on the weight training machines a lot because they are easier to use and appear to be 'safer'. On the contrary, the opposite is true. Relying on the machines too much force your body to adapt to a certain fixed plane and motion making you inflexible, bulky, injury prone and less graceful. But what you want are totally different: a flexible, lean, injury proof and graceful body, right?!

This can be achieved by engaging resistance training sessions involving many Natural Kinetic Exercises. Such training stimulates both the 'fast-twitch' and 'slow twitch' fibers (to build good looking quality lean muscles, it is important to train both types of fiber), increases the metabolic rate, work your muscular endurance and enhance your functional capability. 

Rule no. 3: Do your cardio but don't overdo it!

Working hours after hours on the cardiovascular is not the answer to a leaner body. You need to know exactly how much and the frequency you must do to get the best effects. Do too much, you will burn away the muscles you train so hard for, with no muscle definitions to show. The end product: like a long distance runner. Do too little, you may not burn enough fat, leaving the all the toned muscles all covered.

Rule no. 4: You have to eat correctly! Learn how to control your food cravings!

Many ladies make this mistake: they would starve themselves for days, but when their favorite food like cakes, ice-creams and tit bits are presented before them, they simply let go everything and would eat like no one's business. It is not surprise to hear you eat 1 large family size chocolate in one sitting!

Then they get back to the gym and restart the whole program because they have regained the weight that was lost! That is obviously not the way. There is a better way to control your appetite without having giving up these sweet temptations at all. Yes you can still eat all your favorite food, there is no need to give up anything. The secret is to plan your eating according to your exercise cycle and eat in correct portions.
